Senior year is often portrayed as the highlight of a teenager's school experience; a year full of big decisions, milestones, and excitement. While it’s definitely a special and unique time, it also can be a time of stress, anxiety, and overwhelming pressure. Whether it's the stress of college applications, the fear of what comes next, or simply the weight of so many "lasts," mental health often takes a backseat during this busy time. As senior photographers, we often see how much of a rollercoaster this year can be for both teens and their families. We value mental health for our clients and their parents, and wanted to share some valuable tips:
Recognize and acknowledge the pressure: For many teens, senior year can feel like a pressure cooker. College decisions, final exams, and saying goodbye to friends and teachers can lead to a lot of stress for everyone. Parents may feel the weight too, balancing the desire to support their teen while managing their own expectations. It’s important to recognize that it’s normal to feel some anxiety. One of the first steps in handling it is acknowledging that stress is part of the process, and not a sign of weakness. Reassuring your teen that it’s okay to feel uncertain or overwhelmed (and that you’ll support them no matter what) can help relieve some of the pressure they may feel to “have it all together.”
Open communication is key: Communication between teens and parents can sometimes get strained during senior year, especially with everything happening so quickly. We know it can feel like your teen doesn’t want your advice sometimes, but it’s important to let your teen know you’re there for them, not just as someone to give advice but as someone who can listen without judgment. On the flip side, teens: don’t be afraid to reach out to your parents or trusted adults when you need to talk. It doesn’t always have to be about solving problems, but more having a space where emotions can be expressed without fear of being misunderstood. This could also be a teacher or a coach that you trust, if they are a safe and healthy adult.
Learning to balance rest and work: Senior year is packed with deadlines and milestones to be sure, but it's equally important to make time for rest. While achieving goals is important, so is maintaining a sense of balance. Teens, be mindful of your need for downtime. Whether it's going for a walk, watching a favorite show, or just hanging out with friends, make space for activities that recharge you. Parents, this is where you can play a big role too. Encourage your teen to unplug and give themselves permission to take breaks. The healthiest minds are often the ones that don’t feel the need to be “on” 24/7. It’s also important to set aside time to do things together that are not related to scholarships or college.
Help set realistic expectations: One of the biggest sources of stress for seniors is the pressure to meet certain expectations, whether it's getting into a dream school, landing a perfect internship, or living up to other people's standards. Parents, this is a crucial time to have open conversations with your teen about what realistic success looks like, and giving them freedom to make mistakes. Success doesn’t have to be defined by perfection or a specific path. Teens, you don’t have to have your entire future figured out by the time you graduate. It’s okay to take it one step at a time.
Celebrate the small wins, too: In the midst of everything going on, it can be easy to overlook the small victories. Whether it’s finishing a college application, completing a challenging class project, or simply making it through a tough week, take time to celebrate those moments. They add up and help build momentum toward the bigger goals. For parents, acknowledging your teen's efforts and giving them praise for hard work (without focusing solely on the outcome) can go a long way in boosting their confidence and helping them feel seen.
